Hail history for your roof: every hail day since the year the roof went on

The search reads the record as its publishers release it: local storm reports relayed by National Weather Service offices, the Storm Prediction Center's storm reports, the NCEI Storm Events database, NEXRAD radar hail signatures and MRMS radar hail estimates (MESH), the warning polygons NWS offices issue, and volunteer observer hail reports (CoCoRaHS), each counted as its own independent source. The wind days come from the wind reports in the same record.

The year is the start of the window and nothing else: it is not checked against any record of the property, and it is not used to judge the roof. Choosing "I do not know" searches the full reach of the record, from 1996 to today.

InterNACHI's standard life-expectancy chart puts a 3-tab asphalt shingle roof at about 20 years and an architectural, or dimensional, shingle roof at about 30. The same chart says hot climates drastically reduce asphalt shingle life, that roofs in areas with severe weather such as hail, tornadoes or hurricanes may also experience a shorter-than-normal lifespan, and that actual life depends on local weather conditions, building and design, material quality, and adequate maintenance.

Age and coverage

The Texas Department of Insurance states that as roofs age, some companies will switch to actual cash value coverage for the roof, and that if a roof is in poor condition a company might not cover the roof at all.

The same department states that an insurance company will inspect a roof when you apply for insurance, that they may charge you more or refuse to insure you based on what they see, and that an insurer will not pay for a new roof just because it is old or worn out.

How a settlement is measured

The NAIC shopping tool for homeowners insurance, distributed by the Colorado Division of Insurance, states that actual cash value coverage pays minus a deduction reflecting the home's age and wear and tear, that is, depreciation, and often does not pay enough to fully replace or repair the damage, while replacement cost coverage pays to repair or replace with like kind and quality. The same guide tells shoppers to ask whether the policy carries a separate roof deductible.

How roofs age under actual weather is still being measured. IBHS launched the Roof Aging Farm Program in 2013, an ongoing study exposing real roof systems to diverse climates across the US to understand how time, temperature, and storms affect performance, and it publishes hail impact-resistant shingle ratings.
